Week 12
This week, we were taught on the use and the importance of the 3D printer. Firstly we learnt about what is 3D printing and some examples that 3D printing was beneficial.
Digital fabrication is a production process that combines 3D modeling or computing-aided design (CAD) with additive and subtractive manufacturing. Subtractive manufacturing is when a material is cut into its desired shape/form while additive manufacturing builds the desired item from bottom to top. This is known as 3D printing. Nowadays, more people opt to use additive manufacturing than subtractive manufacturing due to advantages that additive manufacturing brings.
Additive Manufacturing Subtractive Manufacturing
- More cost and material efficient - Uses up more materials and money
- Faster - Slower
With the use of 3D printer, prototyping is now much easier and efficient as performing test and physical evaluation is now faster to do. Replacing different parts of older equipments are also possible by changing the type of material use for 3D printing. One example was replacing aluminum or steel with NYLON 12 carbon fiber. It will be much stronger, cost efficient and faster to make than those counterparts.
We were now than tasked to develop teaching materials for a designated topic and present it to the class. For our group, our topic was the slicer settings for quality printout. Here is our slides.
