Decision Matrix Template
A COWS decision matrix is used as a low biased method to choose the most suitable option for our topic. COWS stands for, C: Criteria, O: Options, W: Weightage and S: Score. The following criteria are used for the selection:
Functionality
Ease of Fabrication
Portability
Ease of Maintenance
Cost
A weightage is assigned to each of the criterias according to its importance. The total score is then calculated. The option obtaining the highest score will be selected as the most suitable idea for our topic. Rating scale from 1 to 3 is used, 1 being the poorest and 3 being the best.
Criteria | Weightages | Options |
| Cooling Hat | Cooling Jacket | Cooling Backpack |
Raw Score | Weighted Score | Raw Score | Weighted Score | Raw Score | Weighted Score |
Functionality
|
30% | 2 | 30x2=60 | 3 | 30x3=90 | 2 | 30x2=60 |
Ease of Fabrication
| 30% | 1 | 30x1=30 | 2 | 30x2=60 | 3 | 30x3= 90 |
Portability
| 20% | 3 | 20x3=60 | 2 | 20x2=40 | 3 | 20x3=60 |
Ease of Maintenance
| 15% | 3 | 15x3=45 | 2 | 15x2=30 | 2 | 15x2= 30 |
Cost
| 5% | 3 | 3x5= 15 | 2 | 2x5= 10 | 2 | 2x5= 10 |
Score | | | 210 | | 230 | | 250 |
With the cooling backpack obtaining the highest score of 250, it is the most feasible idea for our topic. Its value lies in its high ease of fabrication and portability.
Original Idea that SCAMPER was applied on: _________Cooling Backpack______________
New idea from the application of SCAMPER
S/No | Brief Description of Idea (Include sketches, if appropriate) | SCAMPER Word used |
E.g. | Curry puff skin but substitute the curry potato fillings to custard | Substitute |
1 | The padded back panel is modified to include a fan cooling system to keep user cool
| Modify |
2 | The backpack straps are modified to insert a cooling tube to keep user cool
| Modify |
3 | The case of the backpack is substituted with a waterproof material to make backpack waterproof
| Substitute |
4 | The fan in the back panel can be used as a portable fan when backpack is placed down
| Put to other use |
5 | make backpack a thinner and smaller profile just for the cooling equipment for people who do not want to carry a big bag everywhere
| Modify |
6 |
Make heater instead of cooler for people living in cold conditions
| Adapt |
7 | The materials used to make the strips and the back of the backpack can be modified to have more holes in them to have a better air circulation and better cooling effectiveness. | Modify |
8 | The use of cooling system in the backpack can be used as a drink cooler inside the backpack. | Put to other use |
Reflection
In this week's lesson, we learnt about SCAMPER, which stands for Substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put to other use, eliminate and reverse. It is a method to come up with ideas from a broad topic. For example, the questions that we ask ourselves for adapt are ‘how can we readjust so that our product can be made for other use?’ In our case perhaps in places of cold weather instead of hot weather, the adaptation might be to replace the portable cooler with a water heater for the backpack so that it pumps warm water around the tubings, keeping the user warm. That way it depends on the consumer’s needs.
We also recapped the COWS decision matrix, which is a method used to eliminate/ find the most optimal material/product by deciding using a table with different grading criterias, for example, which can be tensile strength to grade for metal. For our main criterias, we decided on functionality, ease of fabrication, portability, ease of maintenance and cost as we came to the conclusion that the criterias are relevant to our products and will allow for a fair judgement without bias.
Team, as mentioned in the lesson, do organise your weekly blog entries into different tabs so that they can be accessed easily and I will not miss out on any important content. Thanks.
