Week 2 Lesson

Reflection on the lesson:

This week, we learned about literature review and evaluating research. A literature review is a survey of scholarly sources (such as books, journal articles, and theses) related to a specific topic or research question. It is often written as part of a thesis, dissertation, or research paper, to situate your work concerning existing knowledge.

We also learned how to access the 1.3 million dollars annual library database provided by all generous SP, where we learned how to utilize the library to better help us find researches, journals, articles, and other resources to benefit our research study.

By doing literature reviews, we summarise the knowledge that we gathered so that we can identify and narrow down knowledge gaps and also let everyone have a better understanding of our research topic. We can also identify where information may not be as reliable, which can be told by the date of publishing, which may be outdated, or because the source is not as reliable, ex. From Wikipedia, as it is free to edit website.
Other reasons why Literature reviews are important as it allows us to:
  1. Identify the need for additional research (justifying your research)
  2. Identify the relationship of works in the context of its contribution to the topic and to other works.
  3. Place your own research within the context of existing literature making a case for why further study is needed.
Evaluating research uses the Meta-cognition Model of Thinking which is comprised of
  • analysis
which is shown by the categorization of the table below, e.x. methodology, currency, resource type to determine if the research is reliable, creditable, and current.

  • comparison and contrast
To find differences between the sources which can be used to identify research gaps, especially if the points are contradictory
  • inference and interpretation
the interpretation of the data collected can be used to identify useful information that can be used in our research study
  • generating possibilities
Which can help us ideate many ideas, increasing both the diversity and creativity of the study.
  • evaluation
evaluation of sources let us summarise our learnings and apply our knowledge in the future

For this week's lesson, we were tasked to do an activity on literature review where we select research related to our topic which is on building a portable cooling unit. We choose to look up the technologies behind air conditioning and other methods of cooling such as mist cooling and fanning.
