Week 6

 Chemical Product: Cooling Backpack. The majority of the backpack will be made of plastic for the backpack casing, cooling components and cooling tubes.


Stage 1 - Raw Materials or Extraction

Main material of our chemical product is plastic which is derived from crude oil. Crude oil is extracted from underground reservoirs using traditional drilling and pumping methods.


Stage 2 - Manufacturing and Production

The distillation of the crude oil is carried out. Naphtha which is extracted from the crude oil is then mainly used for the production of plastics. Polymerisation and polycondensation are then the 2 main processes used to convert naphtha into plastics.


The plastic is then molded into the desired product shape and is then packed 


C2C Principles: Use of Renewable Energy - The machineries can be operated by solar power instead of using electricity generated from burning fossil fuels.



Stage 3 - Packaging


The product is wrapped in plastic and stored in cardboard boxes. Bubble wrap is also wrapped around the product to protect product from damages during shipping.


Stage 4 - Distribution


The products get transported to dealers/ distributors/ shops in many countries, ready to be sold to consumers.


Stage 5 - Use

The backpack is then used to carry your belongings for many purposes while the cooling components keeps the user cool and confortable.


Stage 6 - Disposal

After the backpack is no longer usable from damages from wear and tear, and it is disposed of, it is then incinerated and then send to landfills


C2C Principles: Nutrients become nutrients again - The product can be made of biodegradable plastic. When disposed of,  the plastic is able to degrade and become food for other organisms.

Week 4 Activity

  Roy, Nigel ,Bjorn, Vernon Group 3 DCHE2A02 Topic: Material Selection for Inner Layer of Thermoflask For week 4, we went to revisit our last year module which was the materials for design and we were tasked to find the right material for the inner layer of a thermoflask. In materials for design, we needed to find the right requirements for the material and from there find different suitable materials. We then use the COWS matrix (Criteria, Options, Weightage and Score) to determine the best material. Here is our findings. Material Requirements In order for the liquid inside the thermoflask to remain hot/cold, the inner layer of the thermoflask must reduce the amount of heat transfer from the liquid to the surrounding. The inner layer thus should have a low thermal conductivity and a high melting point.   Since the inner layer will be in contact with water, it must resist corrosion by any liquid put into it, water and acids from soda drinks. Week 1 Group Retreat Activity

 Firstly, we went to buy drinks as we were feeling very thirsty and while drinking we were chatting about the stuff we did during the holidays.  After finishing our drinks, we had to use the toilet. We also decided to prank Vernon by taking a wefie with him using the toilet. We were feeling stressed due to the long and hectic day and decided that we needed to distress by playing some mobile games together. We were feeling restless, so we decided to do some pushups together. Despite it being tiring, all of us had plenty of fun together. All in all, this was a fun bonding experience for our group and we felt that this opportunity allowed us to get to know one another better.
