 This week, we learnt about product sketches. We learned that sketching or drawing is a key technique for creative expression in product design. It is considered the principal approach through which product designers externalise a product’s design concepts. Sketches or drawings enhance understanding and provide visual clues for possible further refinements and revisions of the product. First off, we start with warming up by drawing straight lines, curves, circles and ellipses. We were then tasked to draw one-point perspective drawing of a milk carton. A one-point perspective drawing means that the drawing has a single vanishing point, usually directly opposite the viewer's eye and usually on the horizon line. All lines parallel with the viewer's line of sight recede to the horizon towards this vanishing point. We were then tasked to draw a two-point perspective drawing of a book. Practical 4

 For this practical session, we had to use the knowledge and techniques we learned in the previous practical session on cardboard joineries to create a small game. We decided to make a catapult shooting game where we have to use the catapult to shoot small paper balls into a target to obtain points. The player with the most points will win the game.  We used a combination of folds, tabs and slots in order to make our catapult. We even had to visit a nearby food court to get a pair of wooden chopsticks to use as the pivot of our catapult. We use rubber bands as our spring mechanism. In order to launch a paper ball using our catapult, we had to load a paper ball onto the cardboard bucket which we press down which pulls the rubber band and stores elastic potential energy and release to launch the paper ball. We had to present and demonstrate our product to the class. The class was allowed to vote for their favourite product where we and another group was tried for the first place...

This week we learn about operating principles & mechanism designs. We learned that all devices, apparatus and equipment are designed based on working principles that are either mechanical, electrical, chemical or magnetism. For example,  the separation principle behind distillation is the difference in relative volatility and steam traps operate on the principle of specific gravity. We hand to come up with the principles of what our chemical product is based on. Since our chemical product is a cooling backpack, our chemical product is based on the principles of specific heat capacity and temperature difference. Next, we learned about mechanism enables & enhances principle. We learned that in order for the identified operating principle to work efficiently, mechanical movements are often required.  This week, we were taught on the use and the importance of the 3D printer. Firstly we learnt about what is 3D printing and some examples that 3D printing was beneficial.  Digital fabrication is a production process that combines 3D modeling or computing-aided design (CAD) with additive and subtractive manufacturing. Subtractive manufacturing is when a material is cut into its desired shape/form while additive manufacturing builds the desired item from bottom to top. This is known as 3D printing. Before coming for the session, we carried out a brief literature search about this material as a group. Short Notes on Corrugated Fibreboard A corrugated cardboard is made by a corrugated material between two sheets of paper. There are usually 2 types of paper used, being kraft and test liners. Kraft is stronger and easier to print on, hence used as the outer layer, while test paper is cheaper, hence used as the inner liner. The cardboard can be made double lined by sticking another corrugated board and paper, increasing rigidity and strength. It is also important to consider the paper weight which is measure in grams per square meter. Common paperweights include 115/125 GSM, 140/150 GSM, 185/200 GSM and 300 GSM. The flute is the “corrugated” section between the two liners. The flute height can be changed to give the cardboard different physical characteristics. There are also different type of walls. Week 7 CADD

 This week, we were taught how to perform computer aided design and drafting using Fusion 360. The layout of Fusion 360 is confusing at first, but eventually, we managed to get used of it. This week, we were tasked to create a sketch of a key ring, a sketch using contrains and a sketch for a photo frame. Key Ring Activity: For the keyring activity we were taught how to use tools of Fusion 360 such as fillet, extrude, offset and text. Bjorn Vernon Roy Nigel Use of Constraints Activity: For this activity, we were taught how to use constraint tools such as horizontal/vertical, coincident, tangent, concentric and symmetry. Roy Vernon Bjorn Nigel Photoframe Activity: For this activity, we had to sketch 4 objects for the photo frame. Roy did the transparent piece Bjorn did the holder piece, Nigel did the back piece and Vernon did the front piece.
